ReplyDeleteI donot agree with this translation. I would translate this doha like this : " What is rightfully yours ( that you have worked for and earned) is like milk; what you get after asking someone, is like water. Kabeer says that is like blood, what you snatch forcibly from someone. "

very right...it fits the material world...but Kabir is here speaking of knowledge of God or Truth....The Supreme Truth is got easily and effortlessly, and so it is nourishing for the soul and body like milk
DeleteThen there are spiritual practices that have to be sought from so called masters...they do quench the thirst like water but they can never fully satiate...
And then there are worships, ways of meditation in which one has to make a lot of physical and mental efforts....these are like blood - neither fit to be drunk nor capable of nourishing except if one is a Pishaach!:)))

ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. All poetry is open to interpretation. Though i must point out that sahaj doesn't suggest rightful. it suggests ease. Also to translate 'ainchataani' as snatching from someone would be too literal. But as I said - poetry is personal. Sometimes even the poets themselves do not realise what they have written.
I like P Sreekumar's interpretation since it imparts a strong meaning to this particular poem/doha. Though Medobe is right in suggesting 'sahaj' means ease.

Here Saint Kabeer Says....
Here Sahaj is one full statement ; It means Smooth / Un-strained / Satisfied Transaction.
{For Example : when someone pays more money Or equal amount to the services happily}
And here "Maang Liya toh Paani" is the opposite of "sahaj" means the service providers claims more than the service offered which is often disputed and people gives pays in hate Or unhappily.
ऐंचातानी means "by hook Or Crook"
रक्त सम = sucking blood; ख़ून करने के अपराध से भी बढ़कर,
{for example : if one who cheats innocent people by making false promises; when someone makes fools to the people who trusts to him.
Sahj means spontaneous, a happening unplanned, unexpected.Kabir is a self realized mystic who knows the reality. He is pointing towards a state of let go. When you are indifferent to the promptings of the mind, something mysterious descends like a grace. Our problem is the claim of doership and awakened ones say that everything is happening, the birth,the childhood,the hunger,the sleep, the death. We are really witnessing the show and it's futile to try change the life.
