Recently in the Lok Sabha, Dr. Manmohan Singh quoted this famous couplet from Allama Iqbal's Bang-e-dara (Call of the Caravan or Call of the Highway) which was first published in 1924. Imagine lines from that still being relevant almost a century later.

The ghazal in question is

gulzaar-e-hast-o-bood na begaanavaar dekh
hai dekhne kee cheez ise baar baar dekh

aayaa hai tu jahaa.n me.n misaal-e-sharaar dekh
dum de na jaaye hasti-e-naapaayedaar dekh

maanaa ke terii deed ke qaabil nahee.n hoo.n mai.n
tuu meraa shauq dekh, miraa intizaar dekh

kholii hai zauq-e-deed ne aankhe.n terii agar
har rahguzar me.n naqsh-e-kaf-e-paa-e-yaar dekh

don't see this existential  garden as a stranger
it's really worth seeing, so see it over and over again,

The life that you have, is just like a spark
watch out, lest this evanescent existence dies on you

I concede the fact that I am not worthy of your gaze
But see my passion, and my patience, and give due credit to it

If the desire for sight, has opened your eyes
See the footprints of your beloved on every street

Really liked this one. It is nice that you give translations also. But I Have not seen much of english/latin poetry, please include that as well. Overall a nice blog!
